Forget Taxes, Go Hear Poetry at the Lit

Start: 2008-04-10 21:30

End: 2008-04-10 23:59

With April, comes the promise of the end of winter, true
rebirth with muddy puddles and baseball's opening day. It is also tends to mean just one more snow
fall in the Cleveberg land of eternal grey.
Such is ambitious expectation, so many times based on overwhelming
desire for something just a little better...or warmer. Foolishness in chance. However, a sure thing is that April IS
national poetry month and The Lit Cafe has evolved to a point that it NEVER
disappoints. This month is no
exception.

To meet the high expectation of our discerning audience for
such an auspicious time, The Lit Cafe
is importing a special poet from Worcester Massachusetts and having a rare
REPEAT performance from one of our favorites.

From the scant bio sent by Dan Provost and look at pics the
web , you never really believe that he
is a careful and serious poet. In fact
you may fall into the misconception that Dan only thinks about football and
beer. I quote the bio, "He is also the Head Football Coach of Keefe Tech
High School in Framingham, Massachusetts." But to read his poetry, you
would find that he not only thinks of other deep life thoughts of existence,
but he is quite capable of expressing them beautifully. Dan has been published in numerous poetry
magazines and on-line publications. He won the 2002 RC Edrington's chap contest
with "The Fat Girl on Belmont Street" and his fourth
chapbook,"The 21'st Century Wretch" was published in April, 2007 by
Scintillating Press. He feeds his large and diverse appetites by being the
Assistant Director of Graduate Services at Assumption College.

Our second poet has read at the Lit Cafe before. John Dorsey is
well known in the underground and outsider poetry circles of country. He graced
us with selections from the cooperative title "Harvey Keitel,Harvey
Keitel, Harvey Keitel" done with left coasters S.A. Griffin and Scott
Wannberg. He has edited Griffin's life
opus, "The Numbskull Sutra" and has a new book out with Amanda Oaks
called "Dreams That Would Drown Most Men." In case your wondering,
Griffin designed and edited this with Dave Smith (coming to the Lit in
July). John is an accomplished reader
and has toured the US many times, yet, is an Artist In Residence at the
Collingwood Arts Center just next door in Toledo.

Forget about that inevitable last snow blast. Forget that
taxes are due in five days. Loose
yourself in this outstanding slate, worthy of National Poetry Month, so come
out this, the second Thursday of the month (like every month), April 10 at
9:30pm at the Literary Cafe. Location is 1031 Literary Road in the poetic heart
neighborhood of Tremont in Cleveland.

Poetry at Jewel Heart

Start: 2008-02-23 15:00

End: 2008-02-23 17:00

Right on the heels of Literary Cafe Poetry Nite success, the going keeps going in Tremont. So ask yourself:
Have you noticed the lyrical nature of our prayers and sadhanas as we chant together or during our individual practice at home? Do you recognize the imagery and music in Dharma books? Have you been inspired to scribble little lines on scraps of paper from these?

Jewel Heart has always had a strong connection to poetry, from Allen Ginsburg’s translations of Tibetan and Sanskrit for our benefit to the annual readings at Summer Retreat in his honor. On Saturday, February 23 at 3:00pm, Jewel Heart Cleveland has the honor of having our own Nin Andrews to read and inspire us with her poetry.

Nin (Natalie) Andrews has a new book, Sleeping with Houdini, out from BOA Editions with another, Southern Comfort, soon to be published by CavanKerry Press. She was the recipient of an Ohio Arts Council grant in 1998 and again in 2004. Her work has been published in many literary reviews and anthologies, including Ploughshares, The Paris Review, and Best American Poetry 1997, 2001, 2003 and The Best of the Prose Poem (2006). She has authored several collections including Why They Grow Wings, Midlife Crisis with Dick and Jane and The Book of Orgasms and has won many chapbook contests and the Gerald Cable Award . Nin lives in Poland, Ohio, with her husband and two children.
We will have an open mic afterwards to share our own poems, so BRING them! If you don’t have anything now, we will have pads of paper and pens to put down whatever inspiration you get from Nin or anybody else that shares. This will be a fun time as we wiggle around with words and prance about with prose. So at 3:00pm Saturday February 23 come and hear your sangha sibs read and maybe find the Buddha bard in your heart.
Jewel Heart is an educational and cultural center whose doors are open to all. Its purpose is to transmit the essence of Tibetan Buddhism in an authentic and accessible form. The Cleveland center is located at 2670 W 14th Street in the tradition rich Tremont neighborhood of Cleveland.

Open Mic Poetry Reading at Visible Voice!

Start: 2007-07-26 20:00

Like to write? Like to read? Like to listen? Like to enjoy certain beverages while writing, reading and listening?

Visible Voice Books is pleased announce an Open Mic Poetry Reading on Thursday July 26 at 8:00 p.m. A BYOB and BYOP (bring your own poetry) evening, writers of all interests, skill levels and styles are invited to bring some beer or wine and share their work on our new outdoor patio. Anyone who digs supporting local artists, from poetry aficionados to poetry neophytes and everyone in between, is welcome to come and enjoy a night of spoken word, surrounded by the written word. In the grand tradition of Ginsberg reading “Howl” at Six Gallery while Kerouac poured the wine, we are combining two of our favorite things—creative writing and (responsible) adult beverage consumption for a one-of-a-kind event.

This Open Mic Poetry Reading is the first in what we hope will a series of monthly readings, as part of our commitment to serving as an integral part of the thriving, diversely eclectic Tremont community.
The book’s narrative is complemented with original art by Alanna Marohnic, whose work has foundation in extensive northern experience.

The poetry will be of special interest to people who live on the edge, those who hope to do so some day – and people who live there vicariously.”
