Civility Project

What I loved about the Arts & Cultural Festival

1. Everyone working together to make it happen.
2. The kick ass fall weather
3. Troupe Shabahana - Wild, awesome, sexy and fun.
4. Twirling with a bunch of kids to the music of Jay Krasnow.
5. The funny guy with the fake snakes.
6. The brat & kraut sandwich from Zion Church.
7. The wit of Dennis McNulty

increase in litter in the area

Has anyone else noticed an increase in litter in the area? I've specifically noticed McDonalds and Burger King bags in the street at intersections around W.11 and Kenilworth, W.10 and Kenilworth, and W.11 and Starkweather, as well as along the curb where people park for Lincoln Park. This litter in the intersections along Kenliworth could be just one or a few individuals who do this repeatedly/daily and thus make the appearance that it is numerous perpetrators.

Idea for the day

Change your mind about someone.

Coffee on the Corner

The Tremont Civility Project held it's first Coffee on the Corner this morning at the corner of West 11th and Starkweather. The sidewalks were decorated with chalk drawings by Merrick House school agers and volunteers distributed over 40 cups of coffee to morning commuters in just over an hour! Thank you to Civilization for their generous donation of coffee and everything to go with it. Stay tuned for both pop up and announced Tremont Civility Project events throughout the summer. If you are interested in participating call Amy Weahry @ 216-771-5077 or amyw@mhsettlement.org.

What is the Tremont Civility Project?

The Tremont Civility Project is being spearheaded by Merrick House to help alleviate the gap of community, seemingly being caused by the swift gentrification taking place in our neighborhood. The differences between people are very tangible. Income, life priorities, type of employment (white collar vs. blue collar), level of education, housing (“Do you rent or own?” “How long have you been here?” are common Tremont questions.) Similarities are not as tangible and not easily distinguishable. Everyone wants and deserves respect and acknowledgement. Everyone wants a safe place for themselves and/or their children to enjoy their life. So much can be lost by incivility and so much gained by civil behavior. Civility is where altruism and self interest meet. Everyone has the right and responsibility to improve his or her community. Everyone is a resource and an agent of change. This project is not based on race or socioeconomic status. It is about general manners among all people. The Tremont Civility Project is based on the teachings of Dr. PM Forni of Johns Hopkins University and also the teachings of The National Civility Center

Reasons to love Tremont now!

This is inspired by this weeks New York magazine. www.newyorkmetro.com
Be real. Feel free to list more than one. Be nice. This is not for gratuitous bashing or smart aleck cleverness. We are all here because we love it. If we didn't love it, we would live elsewhere. Share those reasons.

A couple of reasons why I love Tremont-
1. There are still a few places that will allow you to run a tab.
2. The view of the onion domes of St. Theodosius when I am walking/driving home.
3. Scott Radkes public art.
4. Within 50 feet of each other there is a restaurant that serves $10.00 martinis and a Post that serves $1.50 domestics.

Call to Action for Snow Shoveling Crew!!

Per Adam's great suggestion, we are going to organize a snow shoveling crew. Through our Seniors Program here at Merrick House and the local churches, I will identify seniors in need of assistance with their winter upkeep. (Also, feel free to make recommendations) I would like to get a list of interested volunteers together. You can email me at merrick_house@yahoo.com or call 771-5077. It would be fun to do group shoveling and then assign volunteers to seniors for maintenance. Please be dedicated to the task and willing to see this through to the end of the season.
