Property Crimes

Car of resident of central Tremont was burlgarized (broken window) late saturday night 3AM, for car stereo. A neighbor saw this theft in progress, as car alarm sounded and thief quickly and cleanly removed car stereo and jumped into a waiting get-away car, described as a silver compact which looked "Ford-Focus-like". Thief described by witness as African-American male, no notable features. Victim's car was parked in apron of drive with decent lighting, definitely visible. Stereo had faceplate removed but was still targeted. This was clearly a very bold theft by someone who knew what they were doing.

Thanks Second District Officers!

I had to call Second District last week with a stupid problem – a neighbor several doors down had taken my city-issued trash container and wouldn't give it back. I knew it was mine because I wrote down the serial number, and it nearly is impossible to throw trash away if it's not in the container, so I called Second District's non-emergency number.

I was told that "Officers would be dispatched" and I forgot to ask how long it would take for them to get here: an hour? a day? a week? I barely had put the phone down when the officers were at my door.

They were professional and friendly, found my trash container and wheeled it back to my house. Case closed!

On a similar note, I had to call a week ago about a car that that I didn't recognize that was parked so that it blocked the entrance to my driveway. Again, the police arrived within a few minutes of the call, found the owner and asked him to move the car. The entire thing took 15 minutes.

There have been plenty of complaints on this site about slow or rude response, so I thought I would offer a couple of examples of quick, courteous, professional response (which, to be honest, is the only response I've experienced). At times, neighbors have called about loud altercations, etc., and the police have arrived much faster than expected (within minutes). Every time, they handled the situation and were able to calm everyone down without issuing tickets. I think these are great examples of "community policing" at its finest.

Thanks Second District!

Re-opening of Club Moda site has ties to Tremont and 806 Winebar

Today's top story, from the West Side Sun.

Its time to join our Ohio City Neighbors in boycotting Howard Hanna. Picketting their offices and Councilman Santiago's offices are being organized in Ohio City as we speak.

Councilman saying no to nightclub

Thursday, August 14, 2008 By Ken Prendergast

kprendergast@sunnews.comWest Side Sun News

Ward 13 Councilman Joe Cimperman has a question for the owners of the Rialto Theater, which once housed Club Moda. "Which part of no' don't you understand?" Cimperman is opposed to a possible new tenant of the Rialto Theater, 1869 W. 25th St. Vista Hospitality & Logistics Group LLC, owned by Gregory J. Costa, is seeking to lease the theater from Rialto Corp. for an "upscale alternative entertainment venue." Costa is managing operating partner of the Westlake Bistro Group, which runs restaurant M Bistro in Westlake. Rialto Corp. is owned by Zvonko Cirjak and Jason Wein. Jason Beudert, a representative of Vista Hospitality & Logistics Group, will present his client's plans at a meeting of the Bridge-Carroll-Jay Block Club at 6:30 p.m. Tuesday at the Carnegie West Branch of the Cleveland Public Library, 1900 Fulton Road. None of the owners could be located for comment for this article. However, at a public meeting last year, Cirjak and Wein told neighbors of the Rialto Theater they should move out of the city if they don't like noise coming from the theater. The public meeting was held when Hush Nightclub sought to relocate from the Flats East Bank to the Rialto Theater. The previous user, Club Moda, was a source of drugs, fights, noise and complaints. "I don't see what difference it makes," Cimperman said. "Having a liquor license in a place that big is a recipe for disaster. These guys are just intent on making a quick buck." Realtor Howard Hanna is handling the leasing for Cirjak and Wein. According to sources close to the negotiations, the owners have received numerous purchase offers, including from suitors not wanting to serve alcohol. None came close to their asking price of $1.5 million. Rialto Corp. bought the theater in 1999 for $80,000, county records show. For property tax purposes, the Cuyahoga County Auditor's office appraised the Rialto Theater at $225,200. The Rialto Theater is actually in Ward 14, across the street from Ward 13. Ward 14 Councilman Joe Santiago did not return a phone call seeking comment prior to news deadline. "It's going to be my people who are going to be punished by this," Cimperman said. "We want to work with them, but a nightclub is not one of those ways." Ohio City Near West Development Corp. Executive Director Nate Coffman said nothing has been finalized. "It would take a liquor license transfer with the blessing of the community (for a nightclub to open there)," Coffman said. "That always goes through the community process and it starts with the block club." Patricia Zolten, leader of the Bridge-Carroll-Jay Block Club said she wants to keep an open mind. But even if Vista Hospitality & Logistics Group proves to be a responsible user, it doesn't mean a future user will be.

"If the business shuts down, the liquor license stays there (at that address)," Zolten said. "Someone else can open up there and use it."

The Real story why Fire Station 21 was closed, get ready to fight to save Tremont/Flats station after Labor Day

I must tell you after reviewing this WKYC story I became steamed. Please remember we only have a commitment from the City of Cleveland until Labor Day. Then what? Start making arrangements to have the Fire Union officials come to the September Block Club meetings.

We will have to deal with this. Start making noise.

Tremont's Amy is in the video clip.

Safety "Negotiation", Friday at Tremont Pointe

This Friday at 11am at Tremont Pointe, there will be the second disscussion as to why we cannot have the Safety Items requested for the approval of Phase 2 of Tremont Pointe.

Please Attend, Important Info Below

<!--break-->

Safety Items include:

Cameras

24 hour Security

Recreation for the Youth

&

a CMHA Tennant's Council

At the last meeting, I was the only NON PAID person as well as RESIDENT in attendance. The room was stacked with Social Workers, Employees, a Development Representative from CMHA, Commander Sultzer, Chris Garland and Myself. Needless to say they, with the exception of the Commander, they saw nothing wrong with the present situation.

A bit of background;

These meetings are a result of the Board at TWDC pushing for increased security in Tremont Pointe. An AdHoc Committee was assembled to negotiate the terms for phase 2 approval. The Committee was circumvented by the Councilman and our former Board President.

The meeting time is 11am on Friday (most of you will be working, that is part of the design) and will be held at the Tremont Pointe offices.

Please attend if you can, we cannot afford to let these people continue to speak for us. I will answer any questions the residents have about this situation on this forum.

Thanks,

David Purpera

Board Member - TWDC

Prostitution on Holmden

I just looked out my door and saw a pimp and a prostitute negotiating with a john. I called 2nd District and made my report.

Here are some descriptions:

Pimp: African-American male, early/mid 30s, 6'0" 200#, black t-shirt and silver/white shorts.

Prostitute: White/Hispanic female, early/mid 30s , 5'8"ish 125#, wavy brown hair, shoulder length, light-gray halter top.

Client: African-American male, black Cadillac, license plate ETN 1115.

The Cadillac came back after about 10 minutes and dropped the girl back off. I went out to get the license plate and all parties skedaddled.

steak n shake in steelyards

i list this under crime because i think it is. i dined in at steak n shake a couple weeks ago. i had a nice dinner with my boyfriend and paid with my debit card. before ringing up our order, the server asked if i wanted to put a tip on my card and i said no, i will pay a cash tip (which was over 20%). she gave me my receipt to sign. i wrote in my total, signed the bottom and left with my receipt. about 3 days later, i was checking my bank statement and noticed that they had charged me $7.00 more for my dinner. i had the receipt in my purse so i double checked and yes, someone rang up extra money on my card after the fact. i have been playing phone tag with the general manager, who is apparently the only person who can resolve this "mistake", for over a week now. a call to corporate resulted in a generic $5.00 gift card to their establishment. what annoys me about this situation is that i have had to make several trips down there without this being resolved. when i spoke to the general manager on the phone, she didn't seem to take seriously the fact that one of her employees is stealing from her customers. it's all very stupid. so i guess my advice is if you frequent the steak n shake in steelyards and use a credit or debit card, you should check to see how much your dinner really cost you. it's a real shame. despite their great shakes, i can't imagine dining there again.

[redacted] are you a [redacted] why did you take my obama posts off

Hi Guy,

I sent you an email about this. You should have replied to that instead of misusing the site to call me a racist. I took your posts off because Tremonter isn't the place to talk national politics. Local/County politics, sure, but this isn't a place to talk about just any old thing you please.

Since you decided to make it personal, and public though:

I'm going to deactivate your account for a week as a timeout to let you think about what ways are appropriate/inappropriate for using this site. This being the internet, that kind of stuff can show up to haunt people much later. You should not just toss out accusations of racism when it pleases you. There is also a general rule that we don't do name-calling here on Tremonter.

We've had this conversation several times before, you seem to keep forgetting what we've talked about. Just because something happens to you in Tremont, doesn't mean it needs to be posted on Tremonter.

scene magazine letter article on Tremont

I wrote a letter a few weeks back about the scene magazine article on car thefts in Tremont. On the day my letter was printed I came home from a phone call from councilman cimperman. We played phone tag for a few days and I haven't heard back from him since. But he said he wants to meet with me. I'd like to know how he got my unlisted number and exactly WHY he wants to meet with me. I'd just like to get a feel for how people think around here about the so-called crime that Scene talked about. I've always left my car unlocked and found Tremont to be a beautiful quiet neighborhood. Now of course I'm concerned. Maybe their article was exaggerated, maybe not. Nonetheless, I don't understand why Cimperman would call me and the state of Ohio would be on my caller id today. I've done political radio for 10 years and have never been harassed by a politician, banker, etc. So, this current situation is very interesting. I love this neighborhood and don't want to see it go back down the drain. Not everyone on CMHA has criminal intent. Yet if crime is on the rise since the taxpayers have paid for them to come here (unbeknownst to us of course courtesy of local government) then this must be addressed. What are your feelings?
