This month's Bright Ideas in the Plain Dealer features Tremont's Simple Yard Care, owned and operated by Daniel Lake and Allison Hurley: Yard care without the roar of machines.

Simple Yard Care "uses only manual tools -- such as rakes and push mowers -- and organic fertilizers, pesticides and herbicides. Rather than use a truck to carry equipment and debris, they pull trailers on their bikes."

Lake has more than a decade of experience as a landscaper, as well as being a tool-and-die maker. Hurley's background includes a degree in biology, and she has at the Cleveland Metroparks Zoo in landscaping and horticulture.

Hurley, lead designer for Simple Yard Care, encourages people "to select plants that are native to the region and that work well with the ecosystem here."

"Lake is more engineering-minded. He's good at determining how water drainage should work and keeping the team's lawn equipment and bicycles in tact."

As of last July's Free Times article, Pedal Pushers, about the pair:

"Simple Yard Care has about 15 customers, mostly residential, all within approximately a three-mile radius in Tremont and Ohio City, which keeps them within easy biking distance."

Lake and Hurley feel they've proved their concept, now, though, and are planning to hire and expand into other urban neighborhoods.

Trader Joe's at Steelyard Commons?

I created an online petition that I'd like to submit to Trader Joe's corporate headquarters to try to encourage them to open a store in our neighborhood. Obviously, the choice location would be Steelyard Commons because of the other stores and traffic to the shopping site. I realize there are other grocery store options (Wal*Mart, Target) but not as healthy or diverse as Trader Joe's. I feel strongly this store would not step on Dave's Supermarket or the Westside Market toes and would do great in the neighborhood. Honestly, I'm also just sick of driving to Westlake to shop at a store that should be closer to an urban setting.

A Tremont resident has launched a chamber of commerce for Northeast Ohio’s lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender community.

Plexus, the new chamber of commerce, was started with a $30,000 grant from the Civic Innovation Lab, the Cleveland Foundation’s effort to spur economic development in Northeast Ohio. The chamber aims to assist lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender-owned companies network with each other and build their businesses, while advocating for those firms, said Eric Lutzo, president of Plexus and Forward Thought LLC, a leadership development and executive coaching firm in Tremont.

The Gentlemen's Barber Shop has new, later hours. I stopped in the other day and was surprised with a free haircut since apparently a few people have become regulars there after reading about it here. Thanks for mentioning Tremonter. I also got a gift certificate for a steam shave, which I'll be giving away once I figure out a reason to do so.
