interests, aka the American oligarchy. We
have been fighting this battle since the
names were penned to our Constitution.

Even then, there was a schism between those
who wanted to continue an elitest belief
system and those who had a vision of real
democracy. It is an uneasy truce: the rich say:
"We will allow your survival if you play by our
rules."

Every progressive advancement was paid for in
sweat and blood. People in power, who don't see
themselves as evil, consider their lofty state
of grace a gift from divine providence--to the
fitter, better, more deserving. Ancient Greeks
evolved a complex religious ethic, finally erasing
many lines between Man and God; they found our species
so clever, we embodied godliness. They were from
the ruling class, of course; the rulers were
all men.

And that attitude flourished long before Darwin's
thesis of natural selection made the leap from
lower animals to the human condition. Now the
powerful had science to underwrite conventional
wisdom.

We at the middle and bottom take umbrage. Thus
the battle goes on. I love to watch period
films of early English society. How stilted it
was, how stratified and ordered. Everyone, with
few exceptions, honored their preassigned status
in that constricted environment. Is it no wonder
the free-ranging Americans revolted? And it is
no coincidence that once the world awakened
to it full potential, English dominion compressed
down to a small island striving to retain its
place in history.

At present, those elitist elements are again seeking
to cast a feudal net over we in the lower castes.
Americans can break the spell if we choose. It won't
be easy; blood, sweat, tears and tactics will be
demanded. Are we up to it?

Dennis Kucinich merely stated the obvious. We
do need a change. The questions are who is qualified
to lead and who will put aside their own personal
prejudices to follow?
